2019 Bug Fun!

Welcome to Bug Fun Enrichment Summer School for kids going into kindergarten (in just a few short weeks!)

We had a blast this week learning about insects in general and 5 individual bugs.

On Monday we looked at ladybugs.
How lucky of us to have so many helpful
volunteers this week!
At Nettie's station,  the kiddos decorated a bug jar...

At Lydia's station the students created this cutie patootie ladybug...

My station was mostly housekeeping items,  labeling things needed this week like folders and cups...

Mrs. Sauers assisted the children in illustrating our lady bug poem...
(Scroll down a bit to see the completed poems when we added details the next day after the paint dried)

After snack time we enjoyed book time!
On Tuesday we focused on caterpillars and butterflies!
First we added details to Monday's ladybug poem...

At Mrs. Sauers table the kiddos journaled about their very hungry caterpillars...

At Nettie's station the kids designed a cute little caterpillar clip.  .

Lydia reviewed printing names the kindergarten way:
1 uppercase followed by lowercase for the rest of the letters...
The kiddos practiced 2 times,  once on a paper butterfly,  once on a scratch off butterfly...
At my station,  the students used a fun painting technique using pipettes to drip liquid watercolor onto butterfly diffusing paper...

 Beautiful!
Reice helped the kiddos make symmetrical butterflies (sorry the group shot did not turn out)
Many of the kindergarteners brought a bug in a jar for us to look at...what amazing scientists we have!

Every day at group we play academic games together.
At choice time these friends are playing the ladybug game that we learned on Monday...
It's a hiding an shape game,
that's why a couple of the kids are covering their eyes!
Choice time is a happy time!

 We share snack time daily,
thank you for all of the delicious treats!
We watch short YouTube videos of the insect of the day, usually a fiction and a non fiction selection.

Our painting station is a popular choice!

On Wednesday we explored flies and fireflies!
At Mrs. Sauers station the kiddos swatted out the letters in their names...
And made a small version to take home!
At Lydia's area the students created these fun firefly jars...

At my table we painted with...

Wait for it...

FLY SWATTERS!

What fun! The poem is from a rollicking rhyming book called Old Black Fly!

Reice helped the kids count one-to-one and match the numerals...
Nettie reviewed numeric order and printing numerals...

We busted out the playdo to design some awesome bugs!

 Thursday was honey bee day!
At Lydia's station the kiddos created bees for their beehive poem...

At Nettie's table, the kiddos practiced measuring...

Reice played an ABC game with the children.

Mrs.Sauers helped the kids create an adorable picture frame.

She even had time to help them with this little lovely bee!

At my station,  the students added details to these super sweet honey bees...
We also add stickers daily to our folders to help us remember the bugs we've studied!

On Friday we had a guest volunteer!
Thank you, Heather, for playing this caterpillar sorting game with the kiddos!

Mrs. Sauers helped the kids think like scientists and organize some data about our favorite bug...

At Lydia's table the kids counted and compared ants!
They also stamped it up to show how many ants...

Reice played a giant game of "I have ___, Who has ___?"
with the kiddos.

At my station the students created BUG COLLECTIONS in a folder as we spelled out the word B*U*G!

Nettie helped us on Friday with our "prize" table as the kids chose a stamp, a set of stickers, and a magnifying glass!
She was quick though and I did not get a photo.

Choice time is always fun!

 We had more playdo bugs!
 Good reads this week...
Thank you for enrolling your child in our summer school program!  We have so much fun while learning!

See you in a few weeks!
