The ABCs of Kindergarten
Our Handbook

A...Attendance-is very important.
 You must send a note or call the office if your child will not be in school

B...Birthdays are very special to a 5/6 year old.  You may send a treat from home.
We will also celebrate summer birthdays toward the end of the year so everyone has a chance to
enjoy their special day.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND INVITATIONS TO SCHOOL.
Unless you are inviting the whole class.
And
B...blogs  Ask your child’s teacher how to access theirs

B...Books-please read with your child daily, even a few minutes a day makes a huge
difference in a child’s vocabulary.   We will provide several opportunities throughout the school year to order from book companies for very affordable,
good quality books. 
And
B...Breakfast is an excellent beginning to your child’s day. 
The school offers breakfast everyday before school .

C...Call-If you ever have questions about your child’s development and/or
progress in Kindergarten, please call us.  There will also be CONFERENCES in the
Fall and Late Winter to formally discuss your wonderful Kindergartener.

D...Dismissal-if your child is going to a friends/relatives/day care provider’s
after school other than the usual way, you will need to write a note or call the office. 
We will always send your child home the usual way unless we have a note or call from you
©  
E...Eyes and Ears will be screened for vision and hearing in the early Fall. 
Our school nursewill contact you if there is a concern.
 Please feel free to contact her if you have questions.

F...Field Trips will be taken in the Fall  to the apple orchard and fire station,
and in May to Oxbow Park.
If you’d like to volunteer please fill out the background check necessary.
And
F...Fluoride will be offered to your child weekly for a fee.
Look for the sign-up sheet in the Fall if you’d like to participate..
And
F...is for FREE AND REDUCED Lunch.  Please fill out the online application even
If you choose not to use the funds. 
Our school receives additional state funding for each 
  
G...is for the good times we will have all year!

H...Homework assignments will vary throughout the year but will be appropriate for the Kindergarten age level. 
The home connection is so important for a successful year-thank you
in advance for the quality time
you will spend helping and encouraging your student!

I...is for the Importance of keeping the office up-to-date on all records. 
If you move, get a new phone number, change day care, update
immunizations, or if your family dynamics change please phone the office so our
wonderful secretaries  can keep your child’s file updated.
And
I...is for INVITATIONS. Please so not send invitations to be handed out at school
unless you are inviting EVERYONE! 
Invites are easily misplaced on the way home plus feelings are hurt.

J...Join the P.L.A.Y. group (Parent of Lewiston-Altura Youth) to have a voice in your child’s education, meet other parents, and have a good time, too!

K...Kindergarten is Kool! We will be doing a lot of sound spelling
so get ready to be dazzled by your emergent writers!

L...a Library day will be offered each week. 
We encourage you to help  your child find a safe, central location
to keep her/his library book.
 It will need to be returned each week in order to check out a new book from our librarian.
And
L...is for lunch!  The school offers a nutritious and affordable lunch.
  The children do not have to clean their plates but must
“take a bite to be polite!” 
 If you send cold lunch your child can purchase a milk.
 Lunch numbers will be sent in the fall, please help your child memorize it-it will never change while they are in the district.
 L ….is for LABEL!  Please label EVERYTHING your child might
take off at school.
The LOST AND FOUND is OVERFLOWING!



M...Money brought to school by your child for any reason (lunch money, Book Orders, etc.) should be placed in an envelope labeled with your child’s name, teacher, and reason and placed in his/her folder. 
And
M...Medicines cannot be administered at school
unless we have a doctor’s order. 
Non-prescription meds should be given at home. 
Please, NO cough drops.
And
M...Music is taught daily by Mr. Harper!
The kids will be part of a music concerts–
 Marvelous!

N...Night-Night Kindergarteners need plenty of sleep
 in order to perform their best.
Please consider an 8 o’clock bedtime to keep your child
bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

O...The Office will send out a weekly e-newsletter called “The Cardinal.” 
Please look for it every Friday for our principal,  Mr. Riebel’s report, upcoming activities, events, and announcements, and lunch menus. 
And
O...Outdoor clothes (seasonal  items) should be labeled clearly
with your child’s name and user friendly-
your child should be able to get dressed with very little assistance.

P...is for (Physical Education) which is taught daily by Mrs. Stokke. Please make sure your child wears or brings appropriate gym shoes everyday.

Q...is for Questions. Please don’t hesitate to ask any question that is on your mind. 
We always have time to discuss your child’s progress with you.

R...READ READ READ to your child so by the end of the year
your child will be able to READ READ READ to you!
And
R...Readiness (this is a Big One!) If at any time during the year you
have questions about your child’s readiness, please talk to us! 
There are many options  open and
together we’ll find one that works for your child.

 S...Shorts should be worn under dresses and skirts
And
S...is for Snack.  The school provides healthy crackers, milk, and juice.  No snack from home is needed until 1st grade. You may send a snack for the whole class, however, whenever you'd like!  And 
S...is for supplies  Your child will NEED school supplies at home, too.
Pick up scissors, pencils, markers, and glue for home use.

T...toys should be left at home unless it is requested by the teacher.

V...we love Volunteers!  Please let us know if you can help out any time during the year, either in the classroom or by completing project preparations at home.
And for VACATIONS!
If your family will be gone during school days,
please stop by the office for a vacation request form. 
Your child will get make up work AFTER you return.

W...Your child should Wear practical clothes.  We do get messy so save those
beautiful clothes for special occasions.  We will be going out everyday unless it is raining or the temperature with wind chill is less than 0 degrees. 
Please help your child choose appropriate clothing for the weather.
 Make sure EVERYTHING is labeled,

X...is for X-tra-we have extra clothes available in case your child has an
accident (it happens to the best of them!) Please just wash and return them ASAP
©  
Y...Please remember YOU are the most important teacher your child will ever have. 
We are looking forward to working with you to make this a
successful, fun, exciting, and magical year.

Z...is for ZOOM!  Sit back, smile, and watch your child’s skills take off!

These classes are ENRICHMENT and open to any  kindergartener.

with the sharing bag so please…
T...toys should be left at home unless it is your child’s turn.
