2018 Week 1 Back to School, Kissing Hand, Corduroy

Oh My Goodness!
What a fabulous, fun 1st week we had!
We took these first day photos for you!
They also doubled at our star students table.

yep, me too!  I train the kids to use my phone's camera.
We're still working on this skill!
Our first part of each day includes unpacking our back packs and working on morning challenges with our team.
This week and next week the challenges focus on sharing the items and cleaning up.  They are doing great!
The items are rotated for 3 days so each table gets a turn with each activity.  Then a new set of three is used.Later the morning challenges will be a mix of language arts, math, science, and social studies review skills that we complete as a team.
This is an engaging way to begin the day!

The green table began by patterning and building with the unifix cubes...

The yellow table began with pattern blocks...
and the red table shared bears and buttons to sort!

 Here we all are!
And here's our first official selfie with the teacher!

Mr. Riebel came in to say "WELCOME!"
We read the warm and cozy book, The Kissing Hand.
Then we created our own Chester raccoon!

And we do take rest time.
Being in Kindergarten really wears a kid out!

We do our best to offer 2 choice times in a day.
The benefits of unstructured but guided play is well documented to increase social skills, problem solving, and a sense of community. I provide many varied with some constant (like the kitchen, painting, and puzzle stations) activities throughout the year.

Here's some of the options for September:
Playhouses and farm...
 Math Manipulatives...
 Housekeeping...
Building toys (this is a marble run)
 Fischer Price town...
 Pattern Blocks...
and the ever changing discovery table and science tables!

During choice time I often call the kids over to work on small group or individual projects.
On Wednesday we created these cutie-patootie hand prints for you based on the book The Kissing Hand.

These little gifts were also from our first day story about Chester the Raccoon.

During group time we gathered data about the make-up of our class.  As you can see the girls outnumber the boys this year!

Oh my!  Aren't these banners nice that the kids created at Open House?  The Kissing Hand homework looks wonderful displayed on them.
Here's some pics our parts of our room:
The Science table...
 The painting station...
 The discovery table...
 The "Meet The Stars" table...
 Our group area...
 the calendar...
 The Language Arts station...
 The smartboard...
 and our weekly target skills...

Here's a few more pics of choice time on Thursday...

Thursday afternoon we read about a little bear searching for his lost button and a forever friend, Corduroy!
Then we created our own little bear!
This bunch of kiddos is very good as a group at assembling our craft projects!

I try to get a photo of each child as they check out with me, however...there's always a few that forget to check out and then...well, no photo!

We created these lovely picture frames for you as a THANK YOU gift for all your hard work in helping your child be ready for kindergarten and generous supplies and donations you all made to the classroom.
I really appreciate it!
I cannot do my job well without you and your support.
THANK YOU!!!!

These will be sent home on Friday.
Act surprised!
