2019 Week 36 Review and Butterflies and Bugs

A quiet weekend home meant catching up on some much needed reorganization!

We also zoomed over to Baraboo, Wisconsin to check out my boy's new home! Way to go,  Leland and Courtney!
And here's an ultrasound of my 10th grandbaby!
Baby girl is due in the Fall!

On Monday we had 2 "just because treats!"
This clever chef crafted these campfire cupcakes!
How clever!
This generous boy brought pretzels and cheese to share!
Here's our newest literacy skill... the King of -ING!
The kids generated a verb,  then wrote the ing ending!
Monday afternoon we began part one
of a "lines of symmetry" Math project!

We love messy art projects!
Meanwhile, back at home the crab apple is blooming!
Every year I am amazed by its beauty!
On Tuesday we tried our hand at symmetry on the Morning Message.  About half of the kiddos could create a symmetrical butterfly.  Stay tuned to see the increase after a few quick lessons!
Tuesday's centers included:
Butterfly Roll, Add, & Color.
Denise is back to oversee a station at centers!
We missed you!

Lady Bug word search... looking for words in the -ug family

Froooooot Looooop words
(Yes,  they loved to hold that oo sound a long time!)
The kids put 2 Froot Loops where the double oo should be! Then they read the words and then ate the oo of course!
We worked on building symmetrical butterflies with pattern blocks!

At my station we experimented with the magnetic field as we solved these cool puzzles!

We've started a new game at group time called Guess My Number!   We guess the chosen number by moving the greater than and less than signs until we've narrowed down the answer!

We've baby chicks!  Happy Spring!
Wow!  Thank you to everyone who came for breakfast on Wednesday!  What fun to see you with your almost 1st grader!
I will apologize in advance if I missed anyone... it got real busy!

Wednesday's new morning challenges included some very high level literacy skills:
Homophone matching...
(words that sound the same but are spelled different and have different meanings)

 Contraction puzzles...

And sorting common nouns and proper nouns...

We've been using flexible seating for a majority of the year but this spring the kids have really taken flexible seating to a new level!   It's such a powerful concept to choose where to work. However,  the kids have to stay focused and complete their seat work otherwise they must work at their own table the next day.
I told you it was powerful!
Our writing journals are filling up quickly.
These are a practice in symmetry!
Haha! Our Wellness Committee gave us a
"I know you're pooped this time of year " cupcake!
 How funny!

This guy brought a "just because treat!"
 Minty Oreos to the rescue!
Remember the previous post about symmetry?
Well the second time's a charm!

Most of the kiddos worked 2 days (2 literacy blocks)  on these cute In The Pond books!
We are working on stamina.
This book was great practice!

We (finally)  got to create our symmetrical butterfly !
What vibrantly colored beauties!
The key vocab here is "line of symmetry "

These two created 2 more wonderful books for us!
Man,  these kids are nonstop!

Okay, I know there's only 10 more days of school left however
I just had to whip up this new ICE CREAM PARLOR dramatic play center for the k kids!
This is what happens when I cannot sleep at 2 in the morning!
I do wish Amazon Prime had a filter though that wouldn't let me order until the light of day! Haha!
Oh well, it's worth it if the kids explore, share, create, imagine, take orders, scoop up ice cream, make change!

I'll post pics of the kids playing soon!

Here's our latest writing journal: Show me 50-50 Probability!  Wow!  These kids knock my socks right off!

Thursday we took a journey down the Oregon Trail, a project based learning experience put on by the 4th graders!  We pretended to journey 2000 miles from Independence, Kansas to Utah City, Utah!
Along the way we bought and traded supplies, checked out some animals needed for the journey, talked about trapping and hunting, ferried across a river, signed our names to Independence Rock, found ways for kids to work and play, learned about medicine, and finally made it to our destination.  In real life this trip might have taken 6 months!  Check out the last picture, I might have lost a few weary travelers along the way! Haha!

In reality we missed milk break and they were very hungry!
Oh the drama!
Our trail guide provided us a much needed snack...thank you, 4th grade!

The next morning this turned  up so nicely in our writing journals!

As the year wraps up we are looking for fun ways to review and use the skills we earned this year.  Here's an interesting way to use up stickers (thank you, Isabella!) and practice sounding out words!
Finally the kiddos had a chance to play in the new ICE CREAM PARLOR~Enjoy!
