January Week 3

First of all a bit of exciting family news: Our daughter, Sorcha, just got engaged!

We are looking at an October 2022 wedding! Yay! Us!

💓

ALOHA!!!!  We are at the beach in KINDERGARTEN this week and next week!

What fun!

The pictures are loading in the opposite order so bear with me as we go through our week in reverse order!

On Friday we had SHARK DAY!

Oh what fun!  As for all of our themes we learn a lot about the topic through nonfiction books (oh we throw in some fiction for fun here and there!) and through youtube educational videos.  Two of our favorites are Homeschool Pop and SciShow Kids.  Each cover a myriad of kid friendly topics.

We ended our SHARK day with making these cutie patootie sharks that actually eat our sight words!

(Shhhh....don't tell the kids they are reviewing!)

I snapped a few photos of the kids during rest and during free choice.  We sure know how to have fun!

(the kids are still playing in Zones with the 2-3 kids for a month.)

Oh, Hi, there, Little Puffer Fish!
On Thursday we ended our whale study with a guided drawing of these enormous mammals!

Well, here's another dramatic play photo....

We had a Chicka-Chicka-Boom-Boom coconut tree day!

Here's our hallway display of some very lovely coconut trees with our last names running into the top branches!

I love it when we can make a STEM challenge work for the whole group!  Not all challenges lend themselves to big groups but we were able to scrounge up enough materials to create a tray of items for each child (this is typically a small group activity)

The students had to engineer a coconut tree using all of the materials on their tray.  The tree had to hold 20 letters without falling down!  Wow!  What fun! And of course, like a real engineer we had to record our design.

On Monday we honored the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr by recreating the story THE LAND OF MANY COLORS.  It is a story about folks of all colors cooperating but first there was a war!  Ask your child about it and it's nice ending...

Every year we do this activity to illustrate the concept that what's on the inside is more important than what's on the outside. The students vote for which package for us to open and share.  They always pick the shiny one. We discover that the shiny one holds....cat food!  Then we open the plain one and ta da da da! We could have had M&Ms!  M&Ms also illustrates we are all the same, the color of our skin doesn't matter.

If they can tell me what we learned from this lesson then we share anyway!

And here are some photos of the beach fun we are having in our room!

So many fun stations!
